Study Tip: Color Me Smarter!!!

Sometimes I can be easily distracted or I can get bored fast when I am trying to do my school work. Every once and awhile I swear I am a 3 year old trapped in a 19 year old's body.

A Bad Example: I am writing a paper for my English class. I need to find a specific passage to back up my thesis. I have marked, in blue ink, all over my book with notes I made to myself while reading the book. Also, in the same ink, are notes about the book I needed to know while discussing it in class. I need to find only what I did in class because what I thought before discussion was a little off. For my paper I need to be absolutely correct. Sadly, after awhile I get bored and frustrated trying to decipher which blue notes are old (pre-class notes) and which are new (during class notes). I just settle on a few hard facts from the book and do the best I can.

A Worse Example: I am trying to study for a midterm and I am going over a specific cluster of rules that my professor stressed over and over again. It is in my notes and I see them. But oh crap...they are all starting to run together. Everything looks the same in dull gray pencil. (Couldn't take notes with a computer because he won't let me. He's one of those professors. You know... anti-technology = anti-distraction) I get bored and watch Detective Conan instead.

The Worst Example: I am diligently doing my homework in my study spot on campus and then - distraction. Someone walks by with a pair of really cute cerulean blue wedges with a bow that sparkles. Shoes, Pretty Colors, and Sparkles: Three of my biggest weaknesses. I become inspired to browse the internet for similar shoes, or worse I get in my car and go looking for similar shoes.

Has anything like that ever happened to you?

These situations happened alllll the time to me from the beginning of Freshman year until Spring Semester of Sophomore year.

Then, Mio Destino intervened!

Free Fallin (and It's Not Even SUMMER)

I am all for wardrobe updates as the seasons change, but this summer I am holding out on buying summer things because I am OBSESSED with what is going down for Fall 2010.

My favorite three things that I saw:

1. Capes and Ponchos

Two words - Drama Coat. Capes and Ponchos are just a more dramatic way to spice up your outerwear and I love it!

Rag and Bone

Temperly London

Gareth Pugh

2. Grace Found Comfort in Chaos

Lucy - I'm home!!!

All day I have done nothing but watch I Love Lucy on Youtube. This show is one of my absolute favorites. It's up there with The Golden Girls, The Cosby Show and even Naruto. Heck, it's better than Naruto (THAT'S RIGHT - I SAID IT!!! :P)

The humor is absolutely timeless. All four main actors, Lucy, Desi, Vivian, and William, have incredible comedic timing that I have only consistently found in The Cosby Show and The Golden Girls (thus why I love them too). But I also Love the Style of Lucille Esmeralda McGillicuddy Ricardo aka Lucy.

Lucy often had on black cigarette pants or capris. These would be paired with a checkered or plaid top. Sometimes it would be with a silk button down and over it would be a vest. Later in the series she would wear a pretty, patterned jacket-dress piece with a keyhole front over a top and the pants. Usually she would wear her shirt and pants outfits with flats and cluster earrings, oversized pearls or a ribbon in her hair.

Sometimes she would be wearing a dress around the house. It often was a short sleeved shirt dress. The dress would either be solid color with a light collar or patterned. The pattern was often polka dots! When she would go out, she was mainly seen in a gorgeous blue chiffon dress.
Normally with dresses she would wear the same type of earrings and hair accessories. However, instead of flats, she would wear close toed kitten heels with a slingback. She never really wore necklaces when she wanted to be fancy. Sometimes she would wear her fur stole and dangle earrings.

I was starting to run out of episodes on Youtube so I decided to make some ILL inspired outfits!!!

One of the Lucy inspired outfits is a checkered shirt and high waisted black Capri pants. Lucy often wore her Capri pants over the waist with the shirt tucked in. That's why the shirt is hidden under the pants a bit in the polyvore image.

The Herve Leger dress has that keyhole front that Lucy wore. It is a bit fancy but even Lucy's jacket-dress was fancy and she wore it around the house :)

Under it she wore a top so I put a blue cami underneath the dress.

The patterned leggings were inspired from the episode where Lucy buys Ethel a birthday present from Fred. She buys these ADORABLE patterned pants and Ethel thinks that they are ridiculous (she wanted a toaster - lol). Sadly, because it is in black and white I don't know what color they are so I am sticking with black and white patterned leggings.

The blue dress is similar to the color of her fancy dress. I paired it with ballet flats and cluster earrings. Lucy was also often seen with clutch purses or small hand bags. Lucy Ricardo would not have been able to afford the cute, yellow Chanel clutch (well...maybe after Ricky came back from Hollywood) but Lucille Ball sure would have! It is not a shirt dress but it is in a 50s style with a knee length hem and a bow front.

The polkadot dress is 50s inspired too. The heart keyhole opening reminds me of Lucy's jacket-dress again and I just love that belt.

Do you Love Lucy too?

I'm not dead + Fashion Law

Wow - I haven't been here in awhile. Sorry blog world. Forgive me, I overloaded on classes last semester and wanted to get good grades (and I did - YEAH)

But now I'm back!!!!

And thinking about career options - I'll be a (gulp) junior next year. That means only two more years of dear old Duke undergrad and then I'm DONE. AHHHH.
Fortunately I am here an extra semester -summer school!!!! While I am here I am pondering future careers. Fashion law is something I am thinking about going into. The fashion world is beautiful and fascinating, yet I have gotten into thinking about law recently. When I told my parents I was thinking about law school they were so happy "Our daughter is thinking of an actual career path! huzzah!!!"

If I were to go into law I would want to do something in Intellectual Property, Contract, or International Law. Apparently these are three big types of law that make up the new field of "Fashion Law". (International is kind of optional unless you are thinking of working with international fashion brands.) From my research I have found that fashion law composes of so many different types of law. PLUS you need to know the ins and out of the business of fashion. It is not the most glamorous job in the fashion world, but it is a way to be involved with industry workers like designers, pr firms, models and tons of other people. Fashion lawyers handle contracts for modeling agencies, litigate counterfeit claims, work out payment agreements for event spaces for shows and more. Plus they always have to look awesome - they are FASHION lawyers. Since lawyers make a decent living they can probably afford spending money to look awesome too.

There is a growing demand for those who have that pretty little law degree and are knowledgeable of fashion terms and the way the biz works. Fashion law is a growing field, and this fact draws me to it even more.
Imagine becoming a part of something that is going to be revolutionary to law and the fashion world as we know it!

It's just a thought.

Any of you wanting to be lawyers? Go into the fashion industry? Is anyone else out there interested in becoming fashion lawyer??? Let me know and comment below.

Lahv,

(Note: I promised more study tips and even though I am taking classes this summer, I have much more time than before and can actually post them instead of do them and hog them all for myself.)

Samples of my photography...and dorkiness

Dork Alert!

As yall know, I am a huge anime fan. I took these pictures at the 2009 Anime Weekend Atlanta convention. It was so much fun asking people to pose like their characters. I think the pictures turned out really well and quite similar to their drawn counterparts.
